  • The Wonders – Exhibition of Isabelle Arsenault

    arsenault

The Wonders, the first Isabelle Arsenault’s personal exhibition in Italy, will be open from the 5th of April to the 7th of May, at the Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica in Bologna.

Involving both comics and illustration, Arsenault’s work can be identified from a peculiar use of colours ad vehicles of her characters’ emotions – almost always teenagers trying to cope with parents, family and the world around them.
An unexpected meeting with a fox, daydreaming around town, binge-reading a novel – these are all moments underlined with bright and intense colours, becoming sudden revelations of wonder.

In the artist illustrations, the presence/absence of colour emphasizes transitions: from a state of reality to imagination and dream, and viceversa; from repetitiveness to exceptionality; from insecurity to full consciousness.

Isabelle Arsenault’s gardens come to life from a dreamy dimension: alternative realities made of organic elements, fragile plants and colourful flowers. Profound stories and tough subjects are narrated with sensitivity and tact by the author, thanks to her original style.
The exhibition will show the original artwork from her first graphic novel, Jane, the fox and I, and also her last publication Louis parmi les spectres, both created with Canadian writer Fanny Britt.
A special space will be destined to the two biographies illustrated by the author: Cloth Lullaby, The woven life of Louise Bourgeois (written by Amy Novesky, winner of the BRAW 2017 as best art book), and Virginia Woolf (written by Kyo Maclear).
Alpha (a rich spell-book that interprets NATO alphabet, published by La Pastèque) will be displayed in the museum rooms, among musical instruments and scores.

During Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Isabelle Arsenault will take part in different panels and toa workshop for young illustrators at Cineteca di Bologna on Sunday, April the 2nd.
